Mix-to-Picture Monitoring/Panning System
Otari's PicMix Mix-to-Picture Monitor and Panning Systems are breakthrough products designed for anyone creating, editing, or mixing audio for picture. Whether you work with video or with film, PicMix integrates calibrated multi-channel surround sound monitoring and panning into virtually any stereo audio console.
Finally, No-Hassle Surround Sound for Your Console!
Before PicMix, properly balanced surround sound post-production work could be done only on large dedicated multi-format consoles such as Otari's Premiere equipped with the state-of-the-art Virtual Monitor System (VMS). The same team that created this advanced VMS designed PicMix with even greater functionality, at a fraction of the cost.
With the PicMix system, film-style mixing techniques can be easily and inexpensively incorporated into most video or film post-production facilities.

PicMix Monitoring System
The PicMix Mix-to-Picture Monitor System is designed for surround sound applications in film and video post-production facilities.
The system consists of 1 Monitor Master Rack and 1 to 3 Monitor Slave Racks. Each Monitor Master Rack handles 8 audio channels, with each channel having 2 audio inputs with provisions for silent A/B input switching (Bus/Tape, Direct/Playback, PEC/Direct, etc.). You can assign each of these audio channels as 1 of the 8 monitoring buses (Left Center, Right, Surround, Left Surround, Right Surround, Boom/Sub Woofer, eXtra). Any collection of assignments are stored as a panel preset, allowing instant recall for set up for future sessions.
Calibrated insert points with in/out switching are provided for encode/decode systems such as the Dolby (TM) DS-4. The 8 output buses feed to the monitor amplifiers through a calibrated monitor level system, permitting overall as well as individual speaker SPL adjustments. Three SPL presets are provided so that you can be assured of monitoring at the proper specified SPL level of the format being posted.
PicMix options include the Monitor Controller and the Machine Control Interface. These 2 options provide full virtual remote control for PEC /Direct (Bus/Tape) switching, Record Punch In and Out, Solo and Mute, as well as recorder motion control.
One or more monitor controllers can be mounted in, or at, the console. Each controller has 8 physical control strips assigned in a virtual manner to the machine tracks of the recorder(s). Any control strip can be set up as a machine master or a link master, which allows hidden machine tracks to be layered beneath it. The monitor controller also permits solo and muting of the 8 output buses, and the selection of SPL monitor level in either dB increments, or from the 3 calibrated presets.
All components of the PicMix monitor system are linked together via the serial, full duplex RS-485 PicMix Control Network (PCN). PCN assures easy system installation and expandability. PicMix connects simply and quickly into virtually any console environment and interface with Otari's CONCEPT I console becomes true plug-n-play via the optional C1 Audio Interface.

PicMix Panning System
The PicMix Mix-to-Pictures Panning System is designed for surround sound applications in film and video post-production facilities.
The system consists of the Panner Audio Rack and 1 or 2 Panner Controllers. The controllers are typically mounted in or on the console. The audio rack can be accommodated from 1 to 6 panner modules, each of which has 2 balanced audio inputs. These A and B inputs pan to their own set of individual buses, which allows 2 independent stems (music and effects, for example) to have simultaneous active panning in a single audio rack. For single-stem situations, the A and B panning buses (5 each) can be combined at the push of a button. Each dual panning module in the Panner Audio Rack can be configured as a 3, 4, or 5-channel panner, plus a second 3 or 4 channel panner, or as a single 7 or 8 channel panner.
Each Panner Controller has a pair of panning joysticks, plus a pair of knobbed panning controls. Each panner control set (joystick or knob) can be assigned to any of the panner modules in the audio rack for maximum flexibility.
Each of the 2 LED position readouts (64 LEDs) can be assigned to any of the control sets for visual confirmation of audio positioning within the panning soundfield, regardless of panning mode. (L/R, L/C/R, L/C/R/S, L/C/R/Ls/Rs). Also, each joystick may be automated by interfacing to 2 channels of the console automation system, or through an external MIDI sequencer.
In the field, you can add additional dual panner modules to the Panner Audio Rack for up to 12 panner inputs (6 panner modules). Additional audio racks also may be added t the system. Multiple panner controllers can be connected to each panneing rack via the PicMix Control Network (PCN) for maximum flexibility when using a multi-position mixing console.
